Email (SMTP) setup

Your site sends sign-up, password and notification emails through an email service. Brevo is the one we recommend: it is free and needs no card. Gmail works too, with limits.

1. Brevo (recommended, free)

Brevo gives you 300 emails a day for free, with no credit card. That is plenty for a new or growing site.

Create your Brevo account

  1. Go to https://app.brevo.com/account/register.
  2. Enter your email address and click Get started for free. Use an address you can open: you confirm it next.
  3. Open the email from Brevo and click Confirm my email address.
  4. Fill in your name, company name and website. When asked for a plan, choose Free.

Get your SMTP details

  1. Click your account name at the top right of the Brevo dashboard, then SMTP & API.
  2. Open the SMTP tab.
  3. Click Generate a new SMTP key, give it a name such as "My cam site" and click Generate.
  4. Copy the key straight away and keep it somewhere safe. Brevo shows it only once; if you lose it, make a new one.
  5. On the same page, copy the SMTP Login. This is your SMTP user name, and it is not the email address you signed up with.

Enter the settings in your admin panel

  1. Log in to your site's admin panel and open the Email / SMTP settings page.
  2. Switch Use SMTP on and fill in the fields as below.
SMTP hostsmtp-relay.brevo.com
SMTP port587
EncryptionTLS
SMTP user nameYour SMTP Login from Brevo's SMTP tab
SMTP passwordThe SMTP key you generated
From email addressAn address Brevo knows, such as the one you signed up with
From nameYour site's name

Brevo only sends from addresses it knows. To send from an address such as noreply@yoursite.com, add it in Brevo first under Settings, Senders & IP, Add a new sender.

  1. Click Save Settings, then use Send Test Email. When the test arrives in your inbox, email is working.

If your site grows past 300 emails a day, Brevo's paid plans start at about $25 a month for 20,000 emails.

2. Gmail (free, with limits)

Google does not accept your normal Gmail password from a website. You make an App Password instead, a 16-character code for this one use, and that needs 2-Step Verification on the Google account.

Switch on 2-Step Verification

  1. Go to https://myaccount.google.com and log in with the Gmail account you want to use.
  2. Click Security, then under "How you sign in to Google" click 2-Step Verification.
  3. Click Get started and follow the steps, usually a text message to your phone. Already on? Go to the next part.

Make an App Password

  1. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords (Google may ask for your password again).
  2. Type a name such as "My cam site" and click Create.
  3. Copy the 16-character password straight away: Google shows it only once. Spaces in it do not matter.

Enter the settings in your admin panel

SMTP hostsmtp.gmail.com
SMTP port587
EncryptionTLS
SMTP user nameYour full Gmail address
SMTP passwordThe 16-character App Password
From email addressYour Gmail address (Google requires it)
From nameYour site's name

Click Save Settings and send a test email.

Gmail's limits

  • At most 500 emails a day. After that, email stops until the next day.
  • Emails always show your Gmail address as the sender, whatever you type as the from address.
  • Changing the Google account's password, or switching 2-Step Verification off, stops the App Password. Make a new one and save it again.
  • School and work Google accounts often cannot make App Passwords. Use a personal Gmail account.
  • A sudden burst of email can make Google pause sending for a while.
