Push notifications setup
Push notifications reach your members and models in their browser, even when your site is not open. They run through OneSignal, which is free for web push.
1. Create a OneSignal account and app
- Go to
https://app.onesignal.com/signup, fill in your details and click Create Account. - Open the confirmation email and click Confirm Your Account.
- Choose the Free plan. Answer the few welcome questions if they appear.
- In the dashboard, click New App / Website and give it your site's name.
- Choose Web as the platform, then Custom Code as the way to connect.
- Enter your site's name and full address with
https://(push needs a secure site). - Optional but worth it: upload your logo as a square PNG of at least 256 x 256 pixels. It shows beside every alert.
- Click Save, then Finish. Skip any code OneSignal offers you: your site already has it.
2. Get your App ID and REST API key
- Open your app in the OneSignal dashboard and go to Settings, Keys & IDs.
- Copy the OneSignal App ID at the top of the page.
- Under API Keys, click Add Key, name it (for example "My cam site") and click Create Key.
- Copy the key straight away: OneSignal shows it only once. If you lose it, delete it and make a new one.
3. Switch push on in your admin panel
- Log in to your site's admin panel and open the Push Notifications settings.
- Switch Enable Push Notifications (OneSignal) on.
- Paste the two values and click Save Settings.
| OneSignal App ID | From Settings, Keys & IDs |
|---|---|
| REST API key | The key you made under API Keys (saved encrypted, never shown again) |
- Open your site in Chrome or Firefox. Within a few seconds the browser should ask whether to allow notifications: that means it works.
No question from the browser? It may have blocked notifications for your site before. In Chrome, click the icon left of the address, then Site settings, Notifications, Reset to default, and reload the page.
How it works for your members and models
- On their first visit after you switch it on, the browser asks whether to allow notifications.
- Once allowed, alerts arrive even when your site is closed, as long as the browser runs in the background.
- Everybody can switch push and email alerts on or off separately in their account settings.
- Nobody gets an alert about a chat they are already watching.
What sends an alert
Every event that sends an email also sends a push alert, with nothing more to set up:
- Members: a new message from a model, a followed model going live, a fan club subscription.
- Models: a new tip, a new message from a fan, a new fan club member.
